A Day Trip To The Seaside

06 Mar

Believe it or not your Diabetes can even affect a simple day trip to the seaside.  Now your probably thinking you already knew that as at the Seaside you would normally have fatty foods such as Fish & Chips and sugar laden Ice Creams!

Well you’re not wrong, but did you know that because Diabetics have to be be extra careful with looking after their feet, the simple act of going on the beach can become quite complex and some decisions have to be made…

Recently I went with a couple of mates and their kids to Skegness and quite rightly we spent some time on the beach.  The kids went off to the sea for a paddle and after umming and arring for several minutes I decided against the idea (despite really wanting to).

Why didn’t I go for a paddle and play with the kids in the water?  Because not only are Diabetics advised not to go bare foot on hot sand (so as to avoid damaging them – as that would mean a visit to the doctors surgery), but even the simple act of going for a paddle in the sea can cause problems as unless the water is crystal clear you wont know what you are treading on and it only takes one sharp sea-shell or rock to cut your feet which again, would mean a visit to your doctors surgery for them to take a look and to advise on what action should be taken.

So as you can see being Diabetic is very complicated and is probably one of the only conditions that the patients tend to know more about the condition than a lot of the medical profession!
