Digital Photography – Rule Of Thirds

03 Jul

The rule of thirds is a great way of taking fantastic photographs!  The idea goes back to the late 1700′s so it’s not a new idea but one that has worked well over the years for paintings and in more recent times, photography.

The idea is that you split the photograph you’re about to take in to thirds, both horizontally and vertically (some digital cameras have these lines as a setting) and it should look something like this:

The dots indicate the best place to put the subject of your photo, so if you’re taking a photo of a person, instead of putting them in the centre of a photo you should put them where one of the fours dots is.

Give it a go and you’ll soon see that you’ll get some better more interesting photos.

One thing to remember is that rules are meant to be broken!  If you want to put the subject of your photograph in the centre then do so!   The human eye also likes things that are symmetrical so there’s nothing wrong with putting the subject in centre and completely ignoring the rule of thirds!

The whole idea of this rule is to simply give you another option of taking a great photo, but at the end of the day you should take photos how you like.

Spotlight Constantly Indexing – Estimating Index Time

27 Jun

A few moments ago I noticed a dot inside the magnifying glass that is Spotlight so I clicked on it to find that it was trying (for some reason) to index my MacBooks internal hard disk drive and was constantly saying “Estimating Index Time” and not doing anything else!

I tried clearing all my Mac’s cache using Onyx but that didn’t solve the problem.

A quick Google later and I found a solution that I thought I’d share with you here:

  1. Open up a Terminal session
  2. Disable Spotlight by typing in: sudo mdutil -a -i off
  3. I then entered my password
  4. After a few moments I enabled it by typing the following: sudo mdutil -a -i on

I clicked on Spotlight and it said ‘Estimating Index Time’ and then after a few moments it said 31 minutes and it’s been going down ever since so it’s working!

Turning something off and then back on again has worked again!

Safari Version 5

12 Jun

I’m currently downloading the latest version of Apples Safari (Version 5) which claims to be even faster than before – in fact it says it’s the fastest most innovative web browser out there!

They’ve addded something called ‘Safari Reader’ which basically strips out all the adverts on a website so you can just read the article – that’s bound to have an effect on websites who can only exist due to advertising revenue, no adverts shown then there’s nothing to click on so websites go under :( also they seem to have done a deal with Microsoft as Bing search is now integrated in to it.

Is it any faster than before?  I’ll find out once I’ve rebooted my laptop!
