Exploring Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire

01 May

I woke up this morning, took a quick look at of the window and not only was it not raining but I’m sure I could see a bit of blue sky on the horizon – so I decided to head off towards Rufford Abbey in Nottinghamshire…

As you arrive at Rufford Abbey you are greated with a fantastic coat of arms above the entrance.

As you wander around the ruin you will soon notice some faces staring at you…

If you wander down the stairs and go around the corner you will see that it’s not all a a ruinous state…

Although the Abbey itself is free to visit, it is situated in a Country Park where Pay & Display car parking is in operation.

After having a good look around I then got back in my car, programmed up my sat-nav and headed off towards Sutton Scarsdale Hall…

Free car parking is available at Sutton Scarsdale Hall and you have to drive up a private road (which is open daily until 7pm).  As you pull up in to the car park you get to see the remains of what once must have been a fantastic Hall.  I took a few photos and to be honest I wasn’t that impressed…

…that was until I stepped outside to admire the view and then turned around to see the full splendour of what this building truly used to look like!

I then headed off towards Wingfield Manor, unfortunately it’s only open on the first Saturday of each month and you have to book an appointment via English Heritage so I was only able to take a couple of photographs from the side of the road.
